Tap a square

How to use the chart

  1. Find the first number along the top and the second down the side.
  2. Tap (or hover) the square where they meet — the row and column light up and the answer appears above.
  3. Choose a number chip to see that single table written out from ×1 to ×12.

Patterns that make learning easier

  • Swap rule: 3 × 8 is the same as 8 × 3, so the chart is mirrored along the diagonal — you only need to learn half.
  • ×9 trick: the tens digit goes up by one and the units digit goes down by one (09, 18, 27, 36…).
  • ×5 answers always end in 0 or 5; ×10 just adds a zero.
  • The diagonal from top-left to bottom-right holds the square numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25…

Frequently asked questions

What order should children learn times tables in?

Most teachers start with 2, 5 and 10, then 3, 4 and 8, then 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12. The easy tables give quick wins and patterns to build on.

Which times table is the hardest?

Many learners find 7 × 8 = 56, 6 × 7 = 42 and 7 × 7 = 49 the trickiest. The 7s, 8s and 12s tables are usually the last to stick.
