How WPM is calculated
One “word” is counted as 5 characters, including spaces, which is the standard used by typing tests. WPM = correctly typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes elapsed. Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes. Average adults type around 35–45 WPM; 60+ is fast and 80+ is excellent.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average, 50–60 WPM is good for most jobs, and 70+ WPM is fast. Accuracy above 95% matters more than raw speed.
How can I improve my typing speed?
Learn touch typing with fingers on the home row, look at the screen rather than the keys, and practise accuracy first — speed follows. Short daily sessions work best.
Do mistakes lower my WPM?
Yes. Only correct characters count toward WPM, so uncorrected errors reduce it, and every mistyped key lowers accuracy.
