Two different “Julian dates”
Ordinal date (day of year). In manufacturing, food packaging, and the military, “Julian date” means the year plus the day of the year. October 16, 2026 is day 289, written 26289 (YYDDD), 2026289, or 2026-289 (ISO 8601). To decode a code like 26289, the first two digits are the year and the last three are the day: day 289 of 2026.
Julian Day (JD). Astronomers count days continuously from noon UTC on January 1, 4713 BC (Julian calendar). Each JD starts at noon, so midnight UTC is a “.5” value: 2026-10-16 00:00 UTC is JD 2461329.5 and noon is JD 2461330. The Modified Julian Day (MJD) is JD − 2400000.5 and starts at midnight. Neither is related to the old Julian calendar used before 1582.
